Choosing the cork oak floors that are right for your green building project

26 01 2009

As you know, with Wicanders, the possibilities are nearly endless… We put Nature’s palette in your hands, combining textures and surprising colors. The originality and exotic contrasts of each pattern gives any surface a personal and distinctive touch.

But which floors are a better fit for your commercial design needs? Glue down or floating? Xtreme WRT or HPS? Read on, as today we help you determine which Wicanders floors are most suitable for your green building project…

Finding the right finish

Xtreme WRT—Wear Resistance Technology:
Ceramic is, after natural diamonds, the hardest known substance in the world. Our floating cork oak floors coated with Xtreme WRT finish with ceramic micro-bead technology, is a perfect choice if you are looking for a matte, unique, and durable finish with low maintenance.
We want you to feel assured that you are making a good, long-term investment when you choose Xtreme WRT flooring from Wicanders. Even with its hard and resistant features, Xtreme WRT gives the floor soft and natural qualities and none of the usual slippery and cold feel provided by ordinary finishes.

HPS—High Performance Surface:
The high traffic on commercial floors puts much demand on the floor and the finish. Wicanders commercial quality floors are produced with hard-wearing surface lying between the veneer and the HPS topcoat, which makes it extremely wear resistant.
Our HPS finish is based on nano beads technology. Extremely tiny beads are embedded in the top layer giving the whole surface improved properties such as scratch, slip, scuff, and stain resistance—without compromising the natural appearance, elasticity, and beauty of of our cork floors. If you are in search of flooring for high traffic areas with an extremely durable, low-sheen finish, Wicanders Cork Flooring with HPS is the choice for you. With a 15-year commercial warranty, we are confident you will love the look and feel of our HPS floors.

Glue-down versus Floating

Floating:

Wicanders Cork Oak floating floor planks are engineered with the patented CorkLoc® system on all four sides. Each edge is comprised of durable compressed cork fiberboard and Cork Protect®, a natural parafin-based all-around edge sealing system. This tightly pressed seal seamlessly vaccum locks against any and all moisture and debris, setting Wicanders CorkLoc® system apart from other floating floors.

Glue-down:
If your project calls for glue down tiles because of the area of application or the size of the job, Wicanders Series 200 and Series 2000 are the ideal products for you.

A Natural for Green LEED Projects—Cork Plank NeoCon Debut

21 07 2008

For those of you who didn’t get a chance visit our booth at the 2008 NeoCon, here’s an excerpt from Floor Focus Magazine, which features our new product debut—Cork Plank. You’ll love the microbevel!

Wicanders introduced a 4½” cork plank collection called, appropriately enough, Cork Plank. It’s a fairly significant departure from its more traditional cork looks, with the basic feel of wood plank flooring but with the distinctive look of cork.

It’s microbeveled and is installed as a floating floor. Cork Plank comes in 12 visuals and the colors of exotic hardwoods and uses the non-VOC binder Acrodur, developed by BASF, which makes it one of the greenest cork products on the market and a natural for LEED projects. Wicanders is the only cork company using the Acrodur binder. Cork Plank comes with a five-year light commercial or 15-year residential warranty.

It will be available in August or September.”

The Mighty Penny—A Lesson in Conservation & Sustainability

30 06 2008

Walking over the Mississippi River bridge from Rock Island, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa in the dead of winter with the wind blowing in your face at 25 knots or more isn’t exactly pleasant. For the lack of one shiny penny, a person dear to us tells the story of why she always stops to pick up a stray penny. Seems bus fare across the bridge was one penny more than she had that winter morning many years ago. So she walked to her job and never again turned a cold shoulder to bending down and picking up the pennies so many people simply ignore. Valuable lesson indeed.

“Penny, penny, bring me luck. I’m the one who picked you up,” is a childhood chant repeated hundreds of times over the years in our friend’s household, and at the NeoCon show held recently in Chicago, Illinois, the shiny penny once again took center stage at our Wicanders Cork Oak Floor display. Simple as it may seem, the Xtreme WRT finish that protects and enhances our floors does an amazing job of shinning dirty, old, forgotten pennies into their once pristine copper beauty.

Imagine taking the edge of a penny and scratching it across the surface of a cork oak floor, again and again, using as much elbow grease as you can muster. Imagine if you did the same thing to a recently installed hardwood floor. That’s just what our R&D professionals did at the show to demonstrate the benefits of our WRT finish. To us, the results are still amazing, even though we’ve seen the demo a lot.

Our Xtreme WRT finish contains tiny ceramic micro beads. When the penny is rubbed along this surface, all its accumulated dirt, grime, oxidation and years of residue is transformed into a powdery substance that is simply brushed off the floor with the quick swipe of a tissue. Our cork oak floors remained untouched…no scratches, no scuffs, no anything. Attendees at NeoCon couldn’t believe what they had just seen. As you might imagine, the hardwood floor—put to the same test—had a “hard” time, and wound up with enough scratches to call in the refinishers.

So, you may wonder what this Xtreme WRT surface feels like, and if it takes away from the natural beauty of the cork oak. Although it is the strongest varnish ever produced, Wicanders cork oak floors remain soft and velvety warm to the touch, unlike the typically slippery and cold aspect provided by usual floor varnishes.

If you are a frequent visitor to our blog, you already know about the environmentally-friendly properties of cork oak, and how the Montado cork oak forests are crucial in minimizing the world’s ecological footprint by the rentention of nearly 4.8 million tons of the world’s CO2 each year. Now you also know that Wicanders cork oak floors with WRT will most likely last for generations, as will our shiny penny story and childhood penny chant.

Let us hear what you think about the penny test. And remember to pick up and conserve the stray pennies you come across each day. They may save you some serious walking.

Until next time…
Team Wicanders

A partnership for Sustainability

8 02 2008

You already knew that cork oak was environmentally friendly. But now cork flooring gets even greener, thanks to a unique technological breakthrough in its manufacturing process.

In an exclusive partnership, Amorim Flooring—creator of Wicanders and the world’s largest Cork and Wood-on-Cork flooring producer in the world—and BASF—the world’s leading chemical company—are proud to present the next generation of flooring and wall covering cork products. Acrodur® is a water-based binder developed by BASF that replaces traditional resins used to manufacture flooring and contains no ingredients such as phenol, formaldehyde or isocyanate and significantly reduces the level of emissions without compromising the technical performance of the products.

In 2007, BASF conducted an Eco-Efficiency Analysis to determine exactly how eco-friendly cork oak flooring is. Compared to other types of flooring, the study revealed that cork consumes less resources, generates lower emissions and retains CO2 (that would otherwise contribute to global warming) and saves homeowners money because it acts as a natural insulator, trapping heat and bringing down utility bills. There you have it. With Acrodur®, cork is now greener than ever before, while still proving a stylish, durable, warm, and long-lasting flooring alternative. Now wouldn’t you just love to come home to that?

Hotels are getting friendlier…

Lots of hotels are adopting practical steps towards becoming eco-friendly: from efficient energy use to sustainable product materials.

For instance, Chatham Bars Inn—New England’s Grand Oceanfront Resort—underwent renovations that will care for the environment and benefit their business. Recent additions to the establishment include luxury spa suites, an exclusive restaurant, and a 6,000-bottle wine cellar. And all are– you guessed it– covered with Wicanders.
