Amorim to help in development of Eco-Airplane

22 04 2009

The use of composite cork materials in ultra-light civilian airplanes is under development and testing through the AEROCORK project. A sum of approximately 1.65 million dollars will be invested in this project with approx. 50% of that amount being funded by the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF).

The group responsible for the management of this investment is made up of Dyn’Aero Ibérica, Corticeira Amorim through Amorim Cork Composites, PIEP (Innovation in Polymer Engineering – University of Minho) and AST (Active Space Technologies).

AEROCORK is producing, testing and certifying cork composites with the intention of replacing synthetic materials with cork composites in airplanes of Dyn’Aero Ibérica. The first flying tests are scheduled for the second half of 2010.

Amorim, the world’s leading producer and developer of cork composites, and the manufacturer of Wicanders Cork Flooring, will be responsible for providing know-how about agglomerated cork that is the most appropriate to the aeronautical applications in question. Amorim is already involved in the US Space Shuttle project, providing cork composites to NASA, and sees this new initiative as an “opening door” for other high technology industries, such as the railroad system.

In addition to its unique structural characteristics, cork offers undeniable environmental advantages – it is a sustainable, ecological, natural and recyclable material – and will reduce the impact of the aviation industry on the environment.

We are proud that our parent company is part of this project.

Happy Earth Day to all!

Recuperating from Super Bowl XLIII? What about Punxsutawney Phil?

2 02 2009

We hope everyone enjoyed their Super Bowl weekend. We certainly did…thanks to gathering with family and friends, great food, and fantastic, edge-of-your-seat football.

Seems that in spite of all the late-night activity yesterday because of the Super Bowl, our famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did manage to awake from his winter hibernation bright and early this morning in Pennsylvania, and take a look outside. And, as luck would have it, he saw his shadow and headed back into his cozy home for six more weeks of winter!

Groundhogs

We thought about Phil’s Groundhog Day prediction and decided that now,  before Spring, might be a good time to think about some household projects. You could sustain yourself indoors, renew your worn out flooring, and go green all at the same time. How you wonder? By choosing our beautiful and durable cork oak flooring, you’d be helping the Montado forestseco-system survive…home to abundant wildlife (friends of our Punxsutawney Phil)…while helping to make your home healthy, warm, and comfortable for the six more weeks of winter you may have to endure.

Just a thought…now that the Super Bowl is over and Phil has spoken.

Cheers!

Team Wicanders

P.S. And talking about edge-of-your seat, we can’t wait to see everyone’s faces when they lay eyes on our new collections being unveiled at Surfaces 2009 in Las Vegas. It starts today, so if you’re in the area, please stop by, we’d love to see you!

Wicanders Shines on HGTV

15 01 2009

Here we are on the video screen again. Favored by architects and interior designers for its sustainability, sound insulation, scratch resistance, and easy maintenance, it’s no wonder Wicanders Cork Oak Flooring is a shining star yet again on HGTV.

In this episode of Rip & Renew, expert carpenter James Lunday and designer Michelle Carano team up to give homeowner Erica Von Der Leith’s “secret” room a custom look by using  Wicanders Series 100 Originals Collection in “Symphony” with our amazing WRT finish. Even an experienced carpenter like James is impressed at how Wicanders’ CorkLoc system is so easy to install and how it has such a beautiful, seamless finish.

See for yourself how Wicanders transforms the Von Der Leith’s “secret” room into a gorgeous playroom their children will enjoy for many years to come!

And don’t forget to check back often, as we have many new and exciting collections coming your way in 2009.

Cheers!
