Recuperating from Super Bowl XLIII? What about Punxsutawney Phil?

2 02 2009

We hope everyone enjoyed their Super Bowl weekend. We certainly did…thanks to gathering with family and friends, great food, and fantastic, edge-of-your-seat football.

Seems that in spite of all the late-night activity yesterday because of the Super Bowl, our famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did manage to awake from his winter hibernation bright and early this morning in Pennsylvania, and take a look outside. And, as luck would have it, he saw his shadow and headed back into his cozy home for six more weeks of winter!

Groundhogs

We thought about Phil’s Groundhog Day prediction and decided that now,  before Spring, might be a good time to think about some household projects. You could sustain yourself indoors, renew your worn out flooring, and go green all at the same time. How you wonder? By choosing our beautiful and durable cork oak flooring, you’d be helping the Montado forestseco-system survive…home to abundant wildlife (friends of our Punxsutawney Phil)…while helping to make your home healthy, warm, and comfortable for the six more weeks of winter you may have to endure.

Just a thought…now that the Super Bowl is over and Phil has spoken.

Cheers!

Team Wicanders

P.S. And talking about edge-of-your seat, we can’t wait to see everyone’s faces when they lay eyes on our new collections being unveiled at Surfaces 2009 in Las Vegas. It starts today, so if you’re in the area, please stop by, we’d love to see you!

Wicanders’ Cork Oak is Green, Beautiful and Tough!

24 10 2008

While browsing the internet the other day, we stumbled upon a little treasure! We saw a picture of the beautiful piece of artwork below, made out of cork, and just had to do a little investigating to find out more…

Allison's Cork Scrolling Project

Allison's Cork Scrolling Project

Wood worker, artist, and fellow blogger, Allison, from www.wood-alley.com, was given a piece of leftover cork flooring from her friend, a floor installer. She had never used cork flooring in a scrolling project before, so she tried it out and as you can see, the result is gorgeous! While reading her blog and checking out her pictures, we realized that this might just be our very own Wicanders Cork Oak Flooring!

The lovely Allison was gracious enough to let us know that the piece of flooring is Wicanders! It is a piece of the Series 1000 CORKLOC with High Performance Surface finish, or HPS. Because of the HPS hard wearing surface and HDF-High Density Fibreboard with CORKLOC, this piece of flooring stayed strong. This reminds us of how our tough floors are great for kids rooms and kitchens, where they get real wear and tear. And don’t forget about that 25 year residential warranty for Series 1000!

Allison said “I plan on using more of this material as I find it fascinating…” Well Allison, we find it fascinating too! But even more, we find it inspiring that you can make something so beautiful out of cork oak from the Montado cork oak forests. And to top it all off, it is an environmentally friendly product, perfect for green building and green design!

In Allison’s blog, she gives hints and instructions on how to do it yourself! You can see other artwork on her blog, or on lumberjocks.com (an online community of supportive wood working artists). We are so proud that our flooring held up to Allison’s drill press and saws!

Thank you for your art Allison, and let us know when we can see more of your Cork Creations!

Do you have a Cork Creation? Please share with us!

Until Next time,

Team Wicanders

Installing Wicanders Cork Oak Floors

13 10 2008

Installers! Soon there will be a section on our blog just for you…

Thank you for your questions and feedback. We are in the process of putting together an Installation FAQ’s section, which will be featured right here on our blog.

In the meantime, we thought we would share a video of DYI guru Bob Villa installing our Wicanders cork oak floors at a Miami Beach condo.

As stated on his website, “Bob looks at flooring options that included grinding and polishing the cement floors for a loft look, or ceramic Cuban tile, but the sound factor made both impossible. David Southard of DS WoodWorks explains that the building’s impact insulation class or IIC made using tile or hard-surface flooring difficult. To tile the floor would mean more than one inch of cork and plywood underneath and shaving all the doors. So, Bob opted for cork flooring from Wicanders, which is multi-layered with cork faces, a fiberboard middle, and a protective finish on top. Installed on top of cork underlayment for extra insulation, the cork floor is very soft underfoot and quiet. Installation is easy with an angle-to-angle fit. The planks are installed like puzzle pieces then tapped into place for a snap-together fit.”

Watch the video…

And if you have an installation question you would like answered in the meantime, please leave us a comment right here and we’ll be sure to post an answer. We always love hearing from you!

Best…
